FirstWork Curriculum

Building a FirstWork lesson in under a minute

This video walks through creating a new program — selecting targets from the library, assigning a modality, and configuring session settings before launching.

  • 1 Choose a goal from the built-in library or create your own
  • 2 Assign a modality — Receptive ID, Matching, FFC, and more
  • 3 Set field size, error correction, and session parameters
  • 4 Save as a Preset — share with your team via Lesson Code

15 ways to practice any goal

Every goal in FirstWork can be practiced across multiple modalities. Switch how a learner interacts with a target without rebuilding the program from scratch.

Receptive Identification

An audio SD plays and the learner taps the matching image from a field of choices. The core modality for listener discrimination programs aligned to common ABA assessments.

Matching

Learner sees a target image and taps the matching image from the field. Supports identical and non-identical matching. Good entry point for early learners.

Reading

A written word is shown and the learner taps the matching image. Bridges text-to-picture comprehension for literacy and academic readiness programs.

Feature, Function and Class (FFC)

Learner answers questions about what something is, what it does, or what category it belongs to. Covers hundreds of targets across animals, food, objects, community helpers, and more.

Sorting

Learner sorts items into categories by feature, class, or attribute. Builds categorical reasoning and concept grouping across dozens of target classes.

Associations

Learner matches items that go together — sock and shoe, pen and paper, fork and plate. Builds functional relationships between objects and concepts.

Actions

Learner identifies the action shown in an image — jumping, eating, washing, building. Over 90 action targets covering daily routines, play, and community activities.

Spatial Concepts

Learner identifies positions and relationships: on, under, next to, in front of, behind. Targets foundational language for following directions and environmental understanding.

Counting

Learner counts objects or identifies quantities. Targets 1 through 99 with varying array sizes. Supports early numeracy and math readiness programs.

Arithmetic

Addition and subtraction with and without carrying, single and double digit. Presented as visual problems with image-based answer choices to maintain the trial format.

Sound to Letter

An audio phoneme plays and the learner selects the matching letter. Covers the full A-Z alphabet. Supports phonics and early literacy programs in ABA and SPED settings.

Expressive

Learner sees an image and identifies it verbally. Scored by the instructor using Instructor Mode. Supports tact programs and expressive language targets.

Intraverbals

Learner hears a partial phrase and completes it verbally. Scored in Instructor Mode. Targets fill-in-the-blank and conversational language development.

Uploaded Matching

Same as Matching but using images you upload. Ideal for custom targets not in the built-in library — personalized stimuli, functional routines, or community-specific content.

Uploaded Receptive

Receptive ID using your own uploaded images and audio. Build fully custom programs with personalized SDs and stimuli for any target not covered by the built-in library.

16 parameters. Every session configured exactly how you need it.

Every Preset saves your full configuration so sessions launch consistently — no setup time, no variability between RBTs.

Trial delivery

Field size — 2 to 10 image tiles per trial. Control distractor load precisely.
Distractor similarity — Set how similar or dissimilar wrong-answer images are to the target.
Shuffle — Randomize trial order to prevent position bias and rote responding.
Trials per session — Set the exact number of trials before the session ends.
Timed sessions — Run sessions by duration (up to 6 hours) instead of trial count.
Probe vs. teaching mode — Switch between data-collection-only probes and full instructional trials.

🔔Error correction

Border prompt — Show a visual cue around the correct answer: always, never, or after N incorrect responses.
Hide incorrect options — Remove wrong-answer tiles after the learner selects them, reducing the field progressively.
Advance on first incorrect — Move to the next trial after the first wrong answer instead of repeating.
Error correction duration — Set how long the correct answer is shown after an error (2, 3, or 4 seconds).

🎤Audio and pacing

Speaker voice — Choose male or female voice for all audio SDs.
Prompting speed — Slow, medium, or fast SD delivery pace.
Inter-trial interval — Set the delay between a correct response and the next trial appearing.
Success and error chimes — Toggle audio feedback on correct and incorrect responses independently.

👤Instructor and data

Instructor Mode — RBT scores responses manually for verbal or gestural targets. Correct, Prompted, or Incorrect tracked separately.
Highlight correct answer — Toggle whether the correct tile glows after a response, and for how long.
Response hiding — Suppress visual confirmation of the correct answer for more advanced discrimination practice.
Phase markers — Every settings change is automatically logged as a phase marker on accuracy charts. No manual annotation needed.

What's in the library

Browse by category. Every item is available for Receptive ID and Matching. FFC, Sorting, and Actions are organized by the same target areas.

Language and object identification

The largest category in FirstWork — hundreds of everyday objects, animals, food, community helpers, emotions, body parts, vehicles, nature, household items, safety signs, and more. All available for Receptive ID, Matching, Reading, FFC, Sorting, and Associations. Assessment aligned.
